Lucy Mae Kendrick

Lucy Mae Kendrick was born on October 30, 1950 to J. C. and Mary Kendrick and was the youngest of the family including brothers, Jimmy and Larry, and sister, Judy.

Lucy always loved animals, especially cats, having gotten her first kitten at 5 or 6 years old. A grey fluffy kitten she named Smokey! She had many cats during her lifetime, but she loved all  animals and birds and fed anything that came within 100 yards or more. If she could see it, she put out food for it, including deer, raccoons, squirrels, stray cats, even turkeys! One turkey would admire itself in her chrome car bumper, she named him Peanut because that was his favorite food. Her love for birds kept her feeding them until her time here ended. Her last request was for bird seed.

Lucy loved books, including cook books. She was a great cook, and loved making desserts and candies. She made the best yellow cake with chocolate icing, which was always a holiday request! Her array of candies at Christmas time would astound all of us and she always insisted that we eat all we want and take some home with us! Her divinity was a family favorite  that none of us could recreate, so we didn’t even try!

Lucy loved word puzzles of all kinds, and she especially loved jigsaw puzzles. She could put any puzzle together in a short time, no matter the number of puzzle pieces, or the challenge of   the design: solid red circle, holograms, a cat puzzle featuring dozens of tiny cats that had the same design on the puzzle back - at a 45 degree angle.

Lucy loved watching sports on television, football, baseball, and was witnessed to be watching different games on 3 televisions at once. And she knew what was going on in each game!

Lucy helped her mother work in the gardens and can and/or freeze the bounty. They occasionally managed to brew up a special Christmas treat using their “secret family recipe” for muscadine wine.

She enjoyed yard sales, thrifting, and auctions - some might say, to a fault!

Lucy worked for many years with Cobb County School Systems as a fabled “lunchroom lady” at Bells Ferry and Big Shanty Elementary Schools. She loved the work and the kids!  Lucy attended Elizabeth Baptist Church for many years until her mother’s health started to decline as Lucy was her caregiver.

Lucy was really a very private person, a woman of few words, but a wonderful listener. She said she learned so much more by not talking!

Lucy passed from this earth on July 30, 2024, preceded in death by her father, Joseph Clayton Kendrick, her mother, Mary Evelyn Raines Kendrick, brother Jimmy Kendrick, nephew Derek May, niece Lori Mulkey.

She is survived by her brother Larry Kendrick, sister in law Paulette (Polly), sister Judy May, brother in law Lamar, sister in law Juanita Kendrick, nieces Joyce May, Ronda Satterfield, Lisa Gray, Cindy Salyers, nephew David Hayes, and their families, cousins and friends. Lucy loved her family- most of the time!

In remembrance, if you’d like, put out a bird feeder so Lucy’s little friends can bring joy into your life as they did hers!
