Lorice Dow Black

October 7, 1925 – March 9, 2021

Lorice Dow Black, proud Lebanese-American formerly of Greenville, SC died peacefully surrounded by her children near Atlanta, GA on March 9, 2021. She was 95 years old. Born in Raeford, N.C. on October 7, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Linda Dow.  She moved to Greenville, SC at a young age with her family and was an almost lifelong member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, where she was once voted St. Mary’s Women’s Club Woman of the Year. She was a devoted member of her church’s Thursday Night Prayer Community, where she served in the music ministry.

After graduation from Greenville High School, she was employed at the former Greenville Air Force Base (now Donaldson Center), and later retired from the City of Greenville after 30 years of service with the Building Department. She was a charter member of the city’s Metro Toastmasters with which she was involved for many years.

During her retirement years she enjoyed volunteering at various nursing/retirement homes, where she captivated the residents with her rousing piano sing-a-longs.

She was devoted to her nine grandchildren: Brandy, Natalie, Chase, Tony, Olivia, Vincent, Samantha, Anna, Nicholas and her four great-grandchildren: Madison, Elijah, Malachi, and Sadie. They will remember her always for the individual songs Grandma composed for them, along with her innate ability to make even the simplest things exciting and fun!

She was an amazing mother to her four children and their spouses: Larry Black (Astrid), Diane Hornbeck (Kirk), Carol Steinhauser (Paul), and Bill Black (Nancy). She is survived by her beloved brother Al Dow of Greenville and predeceased by her two loving sisters Lillian Vaughn and Renee Toy.

Her abundance of unconditional love and zest for life despite life’s challenges, inspired not only her family but everyone that knew her. She will forever be remembered by her positive attitude and encouraging words, including her favorite line,  “There’s a good day a-coming by and by!”

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, March 13, 2021, 11 AM, at Saint Rafka Maronite Catholic Church, 1215 S. Highway 14, Greer, SC 29650. Burial of the cremains will be at a later date at Woodlawn Cemetery. May her memory be eternal!
