Gene Houston Rutledge

It is with a heavy heart we bid farewell to Gene Houston Rutledge, 83, a longtime resident of Woodstock, Georgia. Gene passed away peacefully at home surrounded by the love of his family on November 19th, 2023.

Gene was born to Houston and Ida Rutledge on June 24th, 1940 in Brownwood, Texas. After High School Gene enlisted in the US Navy in 1957 at the Naval Training Center in San Diego. Gene spent the majority of his 22-year Naval career as an aviation structural mechanic.

While stationed at Argentia Naval Air Station Newfoundland Canada he met the love of his life Patricia Stapleton. They were married on October 24th, 1964 in Marystown NFLD Canada.

After being stationed at multiple locations stateside and many Sea Duty Tours worldwide he was transferred to Wichita Falls Texas in 1973 and was a recruiter for the Navy. In 1978 he received the Gold Wreath Award for Excellence in Recruiting.

In March 1980 Gene retired from the Navy. After retiring Gene worked in sales for a few years where he excelled and was awarded salesman of the year. He then used his Naval training in corrosion control, back at sea traveling the world, working on oil rigs. Gene was a crew manager over Corrosion Control and Safety, receiving multi awards for safety.

Gene enjoyed fishing and reading, and he was the greatest “this is a true story” storyteller. Most important Gene was a devoted husband, dedicated father, and doting grandfather and great-grandfather. He was happiest when he was surrounded by his family.

Gene is predeceased by his parents Houston and Ida Rutledge; and sons-in-law Randy Brenton and John McElwaine. Left to mourn with a lifetime of wonderful memories are his wife of 59 years Patricia, son Bob (Dana); daughters Gena Brazie, Tammy O'Shields (Jeff), and Michelle McElwaine; Grandchildren Tiffany, Patrick, Bobbie, Samantha, Zander, and Rosalie; Great Grandchildren Madison and Braxton; brothers/sisters in law and nieces and nephews.

Gene lived well, loved well, and was well loved. His passing has broken the hearts of many, but his family and friends find comfort in knowing that he no longer suffers from the debilitating disease of dementia.
