Janis McKay, 89

In the early morning of Monday, September 2, 2017, Janis McKay passed away at the Tranquility at Kennesaw Mountain hospice in Marietta, Georgia at the age of 89.  Janis was lovingly attended by her husband of 42 years, Michael McKay. Janis McKay was born on May 15, 1928 in Brooklyn, New York, the only child of Solomon and Evelyn Washnitzer.  Janis was an excellent bridge player who accumulated more than 1200 masterpoints by her early 40s.  It was through bridge that she met her husband Michael and many of her lifelong friends.  She was passionate about fashion, and managed exclusive boutiques in Brentwood and Beverly Hills, California.  After moving from Los Angeles to Florida in 1983, she changed careers and sold supplemental Medicare insurance before retiring in 1995. Janis loved live music and theater, and was particularly fond of jazz.  She was an excellent cook who collected hundreds of cookbooks over the years—she loved to read recipes and had a great eye for picking ones that would work for her and her family. Janis was renowned for her exceptional vocabulary and knowledge of trivia, and excelled at word games like Scrabble and Words with Friends.  For many decades she routinely completed the New York Times Sunday crossword puzzle. In addition to her husband Michael, Janis is survived by her daughters Randi Corwin and Stacy Burns.  She also adored and is survived by both of her sons-in-law, Randi’s husband Anthony Corwin and Stacy’s husband John Horwitz.

The family is having a private celebration of her life at their home in Woodstock, Georgia on September 10th.
