Bernice Rose Sanford passed away peacefully in her sleep on November 25, 2025, at the age of 93, leaving behind a profound legacy of resilience, faith, and love that touched everyone she met. Born on July 1, 1933, in Remsen, Iowa, to Manco and Catherine DeGroot, Bernice embodied strength and determination from the very beginning. At 18, she dreamed of becoming a nurse in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, but chose to stay and help her family run their store—a testament to her selflessness and devotion. At 24, Bernice pursued her independence, beginning a career with Retail Credit, now known as Equifax.
In 1962, she married Dennis Sanford and welcomed two children into her life. Though life brought challenges—including divorce and health struggles—Bernice faced every obstacle with unwavering faith and courage. She worked tirelessly, holding three jobs at a personal care home, Kroger, and as a school bus driver, retiring at the age of 75. Her family always came first, and her sacrifices shaped generations. Bernice was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, and one sister.
She is survived by her brother and 2 sisters her children, Melissa Maddox and Craig Sanford; four grandchildren, Brian Sanford, Josh Bryant, Kyle Bryant, and Samantha Bryant Shoemaker; and nine great-grandchildren. Her love and guidance will live on through them.
