C. M. Herndon, age 94, died peacefully at Wellstar Cobb Hospital on February 4, 2018. His wife of 75 years, Betty Coursey Herndon, predeceased him on July 19, 2017. They met at West Fulton High School, became high school sweethearts and married after graduation in 1942. C. M. was the son of Mr. & Mrs. Charles M. Herndon of Atlanta and the father of two children, Charles and Jeannie, both of whom died in infancy. Born in Atlanta, Georgia on May 5, 1923, C. M. grew up with five brothers: Cliff, Claude, Leonard, Stanley and Harold and his sister, Aline Herndon Reeves. He joined the Army in 1942, serving in the Dental Tech Unit, and became an active member of the Army Reserves for 22 years at the end of WWII. After the War he worked for the VA, becoming a Board Certified Ocularist. He was a member of the American Society of Ocularists for many years. He opened his practice in 1967, Custom Prosthesis, Inc., which he ran until his retirement. C. M. was initiated into the Shriners Yaarab Temple in 1958. C. M. and Betty were very active in the Shriners and in their West Fulton High School Alumni organization. They were lifelong members of Bethany Methodist Church in Smyrna, Georgia. He is survived by many loving nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, February 8 at 11:30 AM at Bethany Methodist Church, 760 Hurt Rd SW, Smyrna GA 30082.
Viewing and visitation will be at 10:30 AM, one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in Westview Cemetery in Atlanta. Please make any contributions in C.
