Freddie Rivera, a man whose heart was as large as his appetite for a good meal, passed away peacefully on March 26, 2026, at the age of 85. Born on August 18, 1940, in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, to Gabriela Creistoff and Sandalio Rivera, Freddie moved to New York as a young man. He was raised in the vibrant streets of Brooklyn, a place that shaped his character.
Though Freddie was a "meek soul"—sweet, gentle, and often reserved—he possessed a quiet joy that came alive when he was surrounded by those he loved. He was a simple man, cherished good company, and could "cut a rug" on the dance floor when the music was right. He was a lifelong lover of great food. While he enjoyed most any meal, he had a particular love for Italian cuisine.
He was a dedicated father to two children, Vivian Rivera and Freddie Rivera Jr. and a proud grandfather to one granddaughter, Danielle Gonzalez. However, his family tree extended far beyond bloodlines. Freddie was exceptionally close to his sister, Lillian Rivera, and her six children. Because of his constant presence and huge heart, he was quickly dubbed "Uncle Freddie"—a title that eventually followed him everywhere he went. To know him was to call him "Uncle," as he truly became an immediate relative to everyone he met.
Freddie leaves behind a legacy of kindness and the reminder that life is best spent savoring the moment (and the pasta). He will be deeply missed by his children, his granddaughter and his many nieces and nephews, and the countless friends who became family along the way.
He taught us that the greatest riches in life are found in a shared meal and the people sitting around the table. He will be greatly missed, but his memory will be cherished every time his loved ones gather to celebrate life, love, and a very good dinner.
