George Donald Bernier, 89, passed away at home on August 30, 2026, surrounded by his loved ones.

Born on May 12, 1937, in Greenwich, Connecticut, George was the son of John B. and Evelyn Bernier, whose family roots traced back to Canada. He was one of five siblings and the last of his siblings to pass, marking the passing of a generation of the Bernier family.

George's commitment to service began at a young age. As a teenager, he served with the Civil Air Patrol, U.S. Air Force Auxiliary, where he was formally commended for his outstanding service during an encampment at Griffiss Air Force Base in New York. He later proudly served his country in the United States Air Force.

A devoted Catholic, George's faith was an important part of his life. Baptized at St. Mary's Church in Greenwich as an infant, his Catholic faith remained a source of strength and guidance throughout his life.

Another defining part of George's life was his commitment to sobriety. Beginning on February 14, 1983, George remained devoted to his sobriety for more than 43 years. Just as importantly, he used his own experience to actively help and support others seeking sobriety, offering encouragement, understanding, and guidance along their own journeys. His commitment to helping others became an important part of his life and legacy.

George loved woodworking and working with his hands. He found great satisfaction in building, fixing, and creating things himself. He took pride in his craftsmanship, and the things he made will remain treasured reminders of the care and skill he put into his work.

On July 4, 1995, George married his loving wife, Elaine, in Marietta, Georgia. Together they shared 31 years of marriage and built a life centered around family, faith, companionship, and caring for one another.

George is lovingly remembered by his devoted wife, Elaine Bernier; his children, George, Brian, Nicole, John, Kathleen, Morna, Suzanne and Betsy; and his seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Each of them will carry his memory in their hearts and cherish the love they shared with him forever.

George leaves behind a legacy of family, faith, service, sobriety, and helping others. His memory will live on through the family he loved, the people he helped, the things he created with his own hands, and the many lives he touched throughout his 89 years.

He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by his family, friends, and all whose lives were touched by knowing him.

A funeral service will be held at St. Clare of Assisi Catholic Church at 6301 Cedarcrest Rd Acworth, GA 30101 on September 10 at 11:00 am.
