John Atticus Montgomery

November 12, 1956 – January 3, 2026

John Atticus Montgomery, affectionately known as “Johnny,” “Slim,” or simply “Big John,” passed away at his home on Saturday, January 3, 2026, at the age of 69. He was the son of the late Arvel Owen Montgomery and Margaret Ann (Fancher) Montgomery, and the brother of the late Debra “Debi” (Montgomery) Davis.

At 6’8”, he stood head and shoulders above most, but it wasn’t just his size that was bigger than life. John’s life was defined by extraordinary creativity, craftsmanship, kindness, generosity, and resilience. Throughout his life and in his work as an electrician, builder, business owner, and general handyman, he was widely admired for his skill, reliability, attention to detail, and his ability to create something beautiful, unique, and strong.

A longtime resident of Euharlee, John was deeply committed to serving his community. He volunteered as a firefighter with Bartow County Station 3, served on the Euharlee City Council and the Historic Preservation Commission, and through the years was active with the Covered Bridge Players, the Fall Festival, and the Euharlee Veterans POW WOW.

John may be best remembered by Bartow County residents as the founder of the Euharlee Festival of Trees, a beloved annual Christmas event held at the historic Granary. For more than 20 years, the Festival provided Christmas gifts, clothing, and personal items to countless children and teens in the community, and it continues today by supporting families on their journeys with cancer.

Above all, John cherished the simple joys of life—hunting, fishing, camping, music, and time spent with family and friends. He had a remarkable gift for bringing laughter and happiness to those around him. Remembered as a “gentle giant” with a unique sense of humor and a cheerful grin, John leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and countless treasured memories.

John is survived by his son, John III (Anna) of Statesville, North Carolina; his grandchildren, Maggie, Owen, Jack, and Myles; as well as Carolyn Montgomery and Richard, Melody, Jacob, and Sarah Moore, and loyal companion, his cat "Minnie Girl."

Also left to cherish his memory are cousins: Elaine, Rick, Lisa, Trish, Kitty, & Robert, his POW WOW family, and many other friends and family.

The family will host a public Celebration of Life at a later date.
