Mary Ann Culpepper Flaig

Mary Ann Culpepper Flaig died of natural causes on May 6, 2023 at BeeHive Homes in Woodstock, Georgia. She was 90 years old. Her grace, wit, and seemingly endless capacity for caring will endure.

Born to Lloyd and Bertie Baxter Culpepper in Atlanta, GA, she is survived by her son, Andrew Hinton (adopted with her first husband, George Hinton), grandchild, Madeline, and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Mary attended Southwest High School, was graduated cum laude from Massey Business College, and took many business courses from the extension school of the University of Georgia.

She retired from Heatcraft Refrigeration, a division of Lenox Industries, in 1995, where she was for 24 years as Executive Secretary and later Manager of Customer Service, retiring as Supervisor of Warranty-Claims.

Prior to moving back to Georgia in 2005, Mary and her husband, Paul, were residents of Gulf Shores, AL for a decade.

A talented artist, Mary was dedicated to the arts and was a longtime member of the Alabama Pleasure Island Art Association, Fairhope Eastern Shore Art Association, and Foley Performing Arts. In addition to landscape, still-life, and portraiture painting, Mary enjoyed crafts like rug hooking and porcelain doll making.

She was also member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority for over 60 years, where she made life-long friends through community service.

During retirement years at Craft Farms in Gulf Shores, Mary and Paul made many friends and were members of the First Baptist Church of Gulf Shores and the Missions Sunday School Class.

After moving back to Georgia, Mary and Paul joined Woodstock First Baptist, and were members of the Joy and Hope Sunday School Class.

After Paul’s death in 2013, Mary stayed busy with charity work and keeping up with her family.

Always a thorough planner, Mary made sure to draft her obituary years before her passing. In the draft, she included this statement: “I truly believe ‘Death is only the beginning of eternal life with God.’ It is my prayer that those I love will enjoy a good life here on Earth, and will be rewarded eternal life with God.”

There will be a private graveside service at Atlanta’s historic Westview Cemetery — where she will be buried next to her beloved husband, Paul Flaig — on Friday, May 12.

In Mary’s memory, the family welcomes donations to the Alzheimer’s Foundation at
