Nancy Lee Goering, 85 of Acworth Georgia passed away peacefully at Evergreen of Arbor Terrace with her daughter Lynette at her side on Monday July 14, 2025. Nancy was born Nancy Lee Petersen on January 11, 1940, in Morris Illinois to Harry and Margory Petersen.
Nancy grew up in a little house on Southmor Rd next to a dairy farm owned by her grandparents Van and Olga Petersen. When Nancy was 10 years old, her family moved to town near her other grandparents Mabel and Silas Johnson. She attended Morris High School and graduated in 1958. During her childhood, Nancy spent a lot of time helping her grandparents. One of her favorite things to do was walk to town for groceries and a movie on Saturdays with her Grandma Johnson
In June of 1958, Nancy married Leo V. Rasmusson, also, of Morris. They moved to Oswego and eventually built a home in Yorkville where they raised their four children until Leo’s death in November of 1972. Nancy worked at Monarch Foundry, Plano IL, Anchor Brush in Montgomery IL and Caterpillar Tractor Co where she retired in 1996. She married Charles R Goering in May 1984. Nancy loved gardening, sewing, laundry, studying her Bible and spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. In 2014, Nancy sold her home in Yorkville and moved to Colorado where she enjoyed the mountains and time with family there. In 2018, Nancy moved to Georgia to be close to her daughter Lynette and more of her grandchildren. Early in 2025, she moved to assisted living at Arbor Terrace and more recently to Evergreen at Arbor Terrace where she lived at the time of her death.
Nancy struggled with degenerative bone disease having multiple spinal surgeries and then COPD. Despite her limited physical abilities, she was unstoppable when you put a shopping cart in her hand. One of Nancy’s gifts was remembering special occasions in people’s lives and reaching out to them via cards and letters whenever she could.
Nancy was preceded in death by her youngest son Garth Rasmusson, granddaughter Sierra Perkins, both her husbands, her sister and her parents.
She is survived by her other three children Dawn (Bob) McNair of Tennessee, Lynette Ebbert of Georgia, Leo (Mary) Rasmusson of Colorado, daughter-in-law Amber Rasmusson and former son-in-law Greg O’Leary; eleven grandchildren: Joshua (Amber) Slaughter, Nathan (Erica) Slaughter, Selina (Gregory) Chancy, Kiersten (Shariff) Martin, Keegan O’Leary, Daniel O’Leary, Miah (Brodey Wilson) Rasmusson, Miah’s siblings Lexi (Steve) Louis, Robert, Amanda Villarreal and Caleb Rasmusson; 15 great grandchildren: Xaivier (Kyrsten Nichols) Slaughter, Sabrina Slaughter, Malaki (Josie Snyder) Slaughter, Ezra Chancy, Alyssa Slaughter, Darla and Teddy Chancy, Noah, Benjamin and Eleanor Martin, Eleanor Wilson, Zander and Savannah Slaughter and Olivia and Sophia Louis . Nancy was blessed to have two great, great grandchildren: Aspen Lasher and Arden Slaughter. Nancy also had two stepdaughters, Sheri Buchanan and Dana Goering and is survived by them and their children Justin, Joey and Cassie. Nancy loved her many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She looked eagerly forward to the day that Jesus would take her to heaven. While we will miss her, we know that she is in His loving arms.
Nancy’s funeral will be at Branches of Christ in Acworth Georgia on August 9, 2025, at 1pm. An interment and gathering will be scheduled later in Oswego Illinois. Nancy always said “bring me flowers when I am alive” so in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to Georgia Community Hospice 245 Country Club Dr Suite 100C Stockbridge GA 30281 or Shriners Children’s Hospital 2211 Oak Park Ave Chicago IL 60707.
