Georgia Funeral Care Is Prepared to Safely Care For Families During the COVID-19 Pandemic

April 1, 2020

Acworth, GA – Georgia Funeral Care remains committed and prepared to safely care for the families it serves during the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Whenever possible, Georgia Funeral Care will continue to enable families to participate in the rituals that are most important to them.

And according to the CDC, at this time, there is no known risk associated with being in the same room at a funeral or visitation service with the body of someone who died of confirmed or suspected COVID-19; however, federal, state, and local public health guidance may impact the size of gathering a family is able to plan. Depending on a family’s preferences, their loved one can be safely embalmed. Families may choose either burial or cremation as usual.

“At Georgia Funeral Care, we recognize our responsibility to protect the health of those we are privileged to serve,” said Kevin R. Marcy, Owner & 5th Generation Funeral Director. “We will continue to guide families, as we always have, in ways they can meaningfully commemorate the life of their loved one while adhering to the guidance issued by federal, state, and local public health officials.”

Marcy continued: “Our staff remains vigilant about cleaning our facilities and ensuring we’re all following recommended healthy habits, such as staying home when sick, washing our hands, and covering coughs and sneezes. The CDC and our state and local public health officials have offered a lot of helpful guidance for businesses on this topic, which we continue to follow.”

Here are some of the services we are making available currently for our families:

  • Viewings or Visitations – We are providing an opportunity for families to say goodbye in limited numbers.  We are allowing groups of 10 people who MUST be wearing masks into our facility (or church if held if service is in a church), at a time.  Each group has time to be in the facility and then the next 10 people are allowed in.  Sterilization is done after every group!  We also practice Social Distancing and encourage everyone to be at least 6 feet apart.  (Embalming is required)
  • Funerals or Memorial Services – The same standards are followed for these services, except only 10 people total (wearing masks), including clergy, can attend the physical service at our facility or at a church.  We are providing Live Streaming/Virtual Services at NO COST to families.  Anyone around the world can view the funeral or memorial service live.
  • Graveside Services - A graveside service is a funeral or memorial service held only at the physical grave.  This service forgoes the viewing at the funeral home, but a small visitation can be held at the graveside prior to the service.  We do adhere to the 10-people rule here, as well. Live Streaming is available for this service.

As a member of the National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA), Georgia Funeral Care regularly receives information via NFDA from the CDC, Department of Health and Human Services, and other agencies about the evolution of COVID-19 in the United States. NFDA continues to lead the conversation with federal officials about the role of funeral service as it relates to the COVID-19 pandemic.
