Sue Ann Smith

Heaven has gained an angel! Sue Ann Smith (Chmura), 76, passed away at home surrounded by loved ones on Monday, May 10, 2021 in Marietta, Georgia. She was born on August 30, 1944 in Dover, New Jersey to Mitchel and Beatrice Chmura.

Sue grew up in Ledgewood, New Jersey and graduated from Roxbury High School.  After high school, she earned a degree in Business Administration while working as a civilian for the Department of the Army at Picatinny Arsenal in New Jersey. Sue later continued her civil service career working for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration at Kennedy Space Center and the Department of Commerce in St. Petersburg, Florida.

Sue married Garry James Smith in 1965 and they were happily married for 31 years until his passing in 1997. She later married Harry Shupe of Wharton, New Jersey until his passing in 2009. Sue was a member of Transfiguration Catholic Church in Marietta, Georgia. She enjoyed traveling, watching movies, hosting dinner parties, and most of all family time which included spoiling her grandchildren who called her Grammy.  Although Sue had a full and decorated career of dedicated service to our country, her greatest contribution was the lasting impact she had on her family and friends.  Always putting others ahead of herself, she taught us to love with your whole heart, the importance of family, and to make every occasion feel more special than the last.

Sue is survived by her son Dan Smith and his wife Sage of Marietta, Georgia; her sister Nancy of Australia; her grandchildren RJ, Joey, Sam, Garrity, and Paisley; her great-grandchildren Landen and Kenlee; and her nieces Michelle and Cindy.

Sue was preceded in death by her father Mitchel and mother Beatrice, daughter Lynda Jane Harris, and nephews Teddy Smith and Michael Evans.

A private funeral service will be held at Georgia Funeral Care, 4671 S. Main Street, Acworth, GA on the afternoon of Monday, May 17th. Out of an abundance of caution due to the pandemic, attendance is reserved for family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to GRACEPOINT School, a non-profit school for dyslexia which was very dear to Sue’s heart.  Donations in her name can be mailed to GRACEPOINT School 570 Piedmont Road Marietta, GA 30066. Condolences may be shared on Sue Ann Smith’s online guest book below or sent to her son’s address 3314 Cranmore Chase Marietta, GA 30066.
