Dewi (J.D.) Wilson passed away peacefully May 14, 2018 after a blessedly short bout with terminal cancer.  He was 77 years old.  The Wilson family moved from Glendale, CA to Marietta, GA where Dewi attended Dodd Street Elementary and Marietta High Schools.  While at MHS he was a member of the Pitchfork staff and was a long-time band member, graduating with honors.  During his MHS years, Dewi played piano for services at both the Christian Science and Mormon churches of Marietta.  He was awarded a Lockheed scholarship to Vanderbilt University where he earned both bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in French, again with honors.  A highlight of his Vandy experience was being a member of the team representing Vanderbilt on the GE College Bowl TV quiz show.

Later in life Dewi obtained a Master of Library Science from Clark Atlanta University School of Library & Information Studies.  After receiving this degree he embarked on a career in library work beginning with the Atlanta Jimmy Carter Library, moving to the Cobb County Library, and ultimately spending 25 years with Kennesaw State University as an instructional librarian, Professor of Library Science.  While at KSU he also obtained a bachelor’s in history.

Preceded in death by his parents, Bette and Larry Wilson of Marietta, Dewi leaves behind his brother Mark of Augusta, cousins Alice Wilson Abram and Edna Wilson Burow of California, along with many friends from all periods of his life who wish him well in his new ventures.  A memorial gathering will be held in late August.  Condolences can be left at www.GeorgiaFuneralCare.com

I will always remember Dewi for his kindness when we shared space in the Sturgess Library, and for his keen interest in the art exhibitions at the gallery there when I was director. Reply to this comment

Dewi was a dear friend and a wonderful contributer to honors education at KSU, teaching some of our best honors seminars and introducing honors students to the richness of KSU's Rare Book Room. I will miss our lunches together and our lovely conversations about film, books, and travel. My deepest condolences to his family and friends. Reply to this comment

In the last several years, Dewi was my travel companion. On our trips, I enjoyed exploring countryside, savoring unique dining experiences and reminiscing about our past - all with a smile and a chuckle. I appreciate how he shared his life and friends with me. A big hole is in my heart with the loss of my dear cousin. Reply to this comment

Dewi will always be remembered by many, and sorely missed. He was a Renaissance man; an outstanding, quiet, unassuming man. I shall miss him. Reply to this comment

Dewi was my dear cousin and I will surely miss him. So many memories, Saturdays in the pool at Lithia Springs(?) while our parents played golf. George and Martha, tutoring sessions when I was 8 or 9. Later, going to places he lived as a child in Burbank, North Hollywood, Porto's bakery and brunch at the Queen Mary where Dewi was interested in everything. Finally, being with him the week before his death and seeing the calm and loving way he faced the end; truly a Profile in Courage! God Speed Dewi! Reply to this comment

Brilliant, dry-witted, calm disposition and well-read, classics, of course. We shared Atlanta theatre and Dewi was a volunteer to the first Marietta Theatre in the Square, our “extended” family. So, farewell, friend, see you at the Theatre! Reply to this comment
